Hatters and Tykes fined £13,500 after 'mass confrontation'
Town defeated Barnsley 2-1 at Kenilworth Road recently
Luton and Barnsley have both been fined £13,500 by the FA for the ‘mass confrontation’ that followed the Hatters’ 2-1 League One victory at Kenilworth Road recently.
After goals from Mads Andersen and Nahki Wells were enough for Town to claim three points, Makenzie Kirk on target for the Tykes, the visitors were angry that they were denied a last-gasp penalty when Amani Richards went over the leg of Kal Naismith inside the area. Referee Carl Brook didn’t point to the spot, instead booking the Tykes attacker for diving and giving Luton the free kick.
It led to an angry exchange between the two managers Jack Wilshere and Daniel Stendel, with a number of coaching staff and players joining in afterwards, as both sides were charged by the FA for the incident. The punishment has now been meted out, as a statement from the FA said: “Luton Town and Barnsley have been sanctioned for the mass confrontation at their EFL League One match on Tuesday 20 October.
“It was alleged that both clubs failed to ensure that their players and/or technical staff did not behave in a way which was improper and/or provocative after the full-time whistle. Luton Town and Barnsley subsequently admitted the charges and an independent Regulatory Commission imposed a £13,500 fine on both clubs.”
Asked about the incident during his post-match press conference, Wilshere had said: “He just grabbed my hand, listen, he wants to win, I want to win. I’ve got a lot of respect for him and his team. At the end we shook hands and it’s just passion, I want to win, he wants to win, and that’s that. Listen, we have to be respectful and we are and they were as well in my opinion, but also sometimes you can see the togetherness in those moments where we wanted to win so badly and we’ve got each other’s back.”
