Hatters are seeking the right character to take charge

Luton Town are searching for the right character to take over as manager according to chief executive Gary Sweet.

Previous boss John Still was dismissed last Thursday after a disappointing start to the season which had seen Luton plummet to 17th in the table.

When asked what traits he was searching for in Town’s new leader, Sweet said: “A character; the right character. This isn’t someone who can crack a joke, I’m talking about somebody who’s got the right spirit, the right philosophy, the right intelligence and somebody who can handle a hotbed of an environment.

“Yes Kenilworth Road can be a bit of a hostile atmosphere sometimes, but I’m not really talking about that.

“This is when we put our plans for a new stadium, that puts pressures on the manager, coaches and players, it could do.

“You get the right person and that’s going to make them want to strive forward to say to himself and to us and to the supporters that by the time we get there, we’re going to be in the Championship, that’s the person we want.”

Sweet admitted he had received plenty of applicants since the position became available and that a decision on the man to take Hatters forward might not be too long.

The chief executive also confirmed Town would be interested in managers who are already in work too, as he continued: “Yes, they could be.

“They might have a job, might not, everyone’s personal situation is a little bit different, but we’re going to consider a number of the applications as the qualities are fantastic that have come in.

“We’re going to take our time, but I don’t think it’s going to take that long.”

Hatters’ aims to relocate to a new 17,500 capacity stadium in Power Court too has already been discussed with potential candidates as Sweet said: “The last time we did this we were in the Conference. Us being a League Two club and a League Two club that’s got this ambition to do these things, the stadium announcement.

“I’ve already spoken to one or two managers and part of the interview process is talking about our ambitions going forward.”
