Luton boss Nathan Jones is determined to ensure the club won’t be ‘burnt’ again in their search for a potential new striker during the January transfer window.

With the Hatters struggling for goals this season, only scoring six times on the road in 13 league games so far, the Town chief admitted recently he may have to look for reinforcements. However, whether the issue can be resolved during the next week or so ahead of the February 1 deadline, Jones said: “It's a very difficult window, the January window, you don't get value for money.

“We don't like gambling on it, to be honest with you we've probably been slightly burnt on it before, only minor, but we did, so we generally don't do it.

“But if something becomes available that will considerably improve us, then we will take that opportunity.

"But if not, then it's about working with what we've got and getting better, as we are a developing club.”

James Collins remains Town’s top scorer this season with six Championship goals, although hasn’t found the net since his hat-trick against Preston North End seven games ago.

Fellow attacker Harry Cornick, Danny Hyton and Sam Nombe are all yet to his the target, but Jones still has faith that he has the goal threats available to him if he doesn't make a move in the window.

He added: “We understand that we’re not as free-flowing as other teams, but we realise at times we can’t be.

"We also realise that within the building we have a lot of options, it’s about finding the right ones.

"We’re always in games, we just probably need to be a little bit more clinical.

"We are creating chances, pretty much every game and we've missed chances, we’ve missed some big chances in games.

"But we also realise that if you look at the top scorers in the league for example, Adam Armstrong (Blackburn Rovers), Teemu Pukki (Norwich City), Dominic Solanke (Bournemouth), Ivan Toney (Brentford), these have cost a hell of a lot of money and money that we’re not in a position at the minute to spend.

“We don't bleat about it and bemoan it, we work with what we have.

"So we have people in the building that we believe can score goals, it’s up to them to grasp the opportunity.”
