Town boss Nathan Jones highlighted the impact that a ‘miserable’ Kazenga LuaLua had made after coming off the bench against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

The 29-year-old, who put pen to paper on a new contract at Kenilworth Road in the summer, was introduced for Harry Cornick with 10 minutes to go and proceeded to run the visitors defence ragged at times, with his pace, power and ability to drive forward in possession too much for the Chairboys to handle.

One trademark spin away from his marker in close quarters led to Town’s victory-sealing strike, Elliot Lee the beneficiary of his perfect cut-back to side-foot home a first goal of the season and make it 2-0 to the hosts.

LuaLua is yet to start a league game since Jones returned to manage the Hatters after lockdown, although when in the match-day squad, has come off the bench in all bar one Championship encounter, as the boss admitted the winger is desperate to be included from the opening whistle.

He said: “That’s what quality you need, Kazenga can do that and that’s why we want him, he has something totally different to anyone else in the side.

“He hasn’t been happy all week, he’s been miserable all week, but when he comes on he makes a massive difference and puts the game to bed, so we’re very pleased.”

On why LuaLua, who has made 54 league appearances since joining Luton, but 29 of them as a substitute was down in the dumps, Jones added: “Because he's not starting or you have a go at him as you want him to get better.

“I care about everyone, so I sometimes have a go at them.

"I’m very vociferous with them and sometimes they have the hump with that, but it’s only because I want to make them better.”
