Hatters CEO: We've had to make some difficult decisions to keep club going during coronavirus pandemic

Luton chief executive Gary Sweet has opened up to just how tough a task it has been to keep the Hatters afloat during the coronavirus pandemic.

With Town playing behind closed doors for over a year now, bar two matches in December, it has robbed the club of any much-needed match day revenue brought in by full houses at Kenilworth Road.

There is finally light at the end of the tunnel though and the hope that the 2021-22 season will kick off in front of packed stadiums once more, as reflecting on the last 12 months, Sweet said: “I can’t tell you how difficult it’s been, but it really has been a lot of hard work.

“I thank all the people around us at the club throughout as we’ve had to make some really difficult decisions where it’s not been comfortable and it goes against the grain to make some of these tough decisions.

“But our primary objective is to cut our cloth accordingly, and because of that it leaves us in a really good position coming out of it.

“It doesn’t help that we’re having to spend quite a bit of money on planning applications as well, that is a major cost that does have impact on our ambitions as a football club, but it’s a temporary measure to elevate us to the next level.

“Once we get through that gate and with the supporters all still continuing to support us for which we are really grateful of, financially we will be in such a great position.

"Everybody involved, everybody who’s contributed, from Janet in Block A to Nathan (Jones) and every player on the pitch, everybody can hold their heads high and have a bit of pride in what we’ve achieved as we’re only going in one direction."
