Luton boss Nathan Jones revealed the club did 'everything possible' to sign Spurs defender Cameron Carter-Vickers over the summer.

The 23-year-old was a massive part of Town's ultimately successful fight to stay in the Championship up last season, playing 16 times in the centre of defence, helping the club avoid relegation on the final day of the season.

After returning to Tottenham, he was linked with a move back to Kenilworth Road, but the deal never materialised, as he headed on a season-long loan to this weekend's opponents Bournemouth.

An ankle injury has sidelined Carter-Vickers for the majority of the campaign, as he finally made his long-awaited Cherries debut in the 4-1 FA Cup third round win over Oldham on Saturday and was on the bench for Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with Millwall.

Ahead of the match against his former team-mates on Saturday, when asked how his attempts went at re-signing the USA international from Spurs, Jones said: "We tried everything possible.

"How close we came I don’t know, I know a certain level but we tried everything possible to bring him back to the club.

"To be fair to the board here and Gary (Sweet, chief executive), we do try, we do try and move the club forward.

"There are certain restrictions which we are all aware of and I have no problem with but I was on a diploma where our club was singled out as being a very, very well run club.

"We know that is the criteria we operate under and Cameron became a victim of that."
