Town chief Nathan Jones conceded he may have to freshen up his side for this afternoon’s trip to Cardiff City.

The Hatters squad are on game three of a nine-match run before Christmas Day, with a further three fixtures following until some respite in the form of the FA Cup weekend on January 9.

Jones made two changes to the side for the 1-1 draw against Birmingham City on Tuesday night, and could look to rotate a few more in Wales to give Town the best chance of coming away with the victory.

He said: “We freshened it up with one or two bodies, we’re probably going to have to freshen it up again to keep everyone focused and everyone at it.

"The games are coming thick and fast, so to maintain those levels, because we put in a massive shift on Saturday and Tuesday, we really did, and it kind of showed towards the last 10, 15 minutes.

"Even though we created a number of chances, especially on the break, our energy levels had dipped slightly and the squad is so, so important.

"They've trained again well before we make the journey down to God’s country.”

Jones knows whatever decision he makes comes with an element of doubt especially after the way his team played against Birmingham in midweek, putting in a fine second half performance that deserved far better than the point they garnered.

He continued: “You’re kind of damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

"Third game in the week and if you don’t freshen it up, will you get the energy levels? And if you do, you're changing a side that’s in decent form.

"We’ve got a side and squad that can handle that whether we do or don’t, but we have to make sure we are true to ourselves as we do need a little bit of freshness now and again to keep everyone really focused and the energy levels high.

"Then those that get a rest are game changers to come on and make an impact, so we have to share the burden in these times.

"We just hope and pray that all our players are ready when they’re called upon.”
