Hatters in tentative talks with Mackail-Smith

Town boss John Still has confirmed he has had tentative discussions with striker Craig Mackail-Smith over a move to Kenilworth Road.

The 31-year-old, who Still unearthed from Arlesey Town while manager at Dagenham & Redbridge back in August 2004, is now a free agent after being released by Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion last month.

Although the signing is by no means a done deal, with Mackail-Smith believed to be wanting to play at the highest level possible, Still admitted to the News/Gazette he had been in touch about a possible deal.

He said: “I know Craig so well, we all do, me, Terry (Harris), Dave Richardson, whose worked with him for years.

“Craig’s been at Brighton on seriously good money and he will probably want to try and stay in the Championship.

“All we’ve done so far is said ‘if you want to talk to us come and talk to us’ and he said ‘lets get to the end of June and there might be something to talk about or not.’”
