Hatters looking at former Liverpool and Wigan youngster

The 22-year-old played the full 90 minutes as Hatters won 2-1 at Welsh Premier League side Airbus UK Broughton on Tuesday and impressed with a tigerish display in the holding midfielder’s role.

After being released from Anfield, Routledge moved to Wigan Athletic, where he made one Premier League appearance against Portsmouth in May 2009.

From there, he joined Scottish side Hamilton Academical, playing over 25 games last season, including twice at Celtic, scoring once in the 2-2 draw at St Mirren.

When The Accies were relegated, Routlege was released and according to Brabin, has a number of clubs after his signature.

He said: “He was at Liverpool and Wigan Athletic and was part of the (James) McArthur deal that took him to Wigan from Hamilton.

“I think he had a clause to be released if they went down and there’s an opportunity we can get him.

“Jon’s a young player. I’ve known him for the last few years and it’s a good opportunity to have a look at him.

“We’re not putting any pressure on Jon. I’ve spoken to him over the last few weeks and his father too.

“I know his father quite well and there are some good clubs who are looking at him.

“He’s a good footballer, he is very tenacious and we’ll just see how it goes for now.”

Town fans also got their first view of new signing James Dance on Tuesday night after joining from Crawley Town on Monday.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder played the first 45 minutes and Brabin was thrilled to finally have his man on board.

The boss added: “When we lost Claude (Gnakpa) I thought we needed to replace him as soon as possible.

“James is a player we wanted to sign for a while. He’s a player that I’ve really liked nearly every time I’ve seen him.

“When the opportunity came to sign him, I was delighted to be able to bring him in.”
