Luton were beaten 4-1 by a rampant title-chasing Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.
The Hatters had led at the break through Chiedozie Ogbene’s back post header, before second half goals from Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott condemned them to defeat. To find out how Town’s players rated on the night, see below.
5. Amari'i Bell: 7
Learned his lesson from Sunday's defeat to Manchester United as he didn't find himself caught out with any risky passes when facing his own goal. Confident start to the game helped Luton take their chance when it came as he then kept his wits about him to intercept a number of Liverpool's attacks leaving a sense of annoyance on the Kop. Like the rest of his team-mates, couldn't maintain that in the second period as the Reds were just that bit too good. Photo: John Powell
6. Alfie Doughty: 7
Luton's main threats came down the flanks in the first half as Doughty was a big part of that, with one break early on seeing the wingback drive an effort across goal and wide. Another foray helped win the throw-in that Luton were able to take the lead from, although didn't get too many chances from set-pieces with Town, as expected, kept at arm's length. Once the Reds had the bit between their teeth, his clearance saw Liverpool able to add a third and injury when later flagged offside ended his evening early. Photo: Clive Brunskill
7. Sambi Lokonga: 8.5
Was one of Luton's stand-out performers in the first half as with the midfield areas so congested, he gave an imperious display, particularly one moment when under pressure from two opponents just outside his area, he was able to shrug them off, keep hold of the ball and find a team-mate. Wonderful effort in dispossessing Elliott inside Town's area but unfortunately for the Belgian and the Hatters, he felt his hamstring at half time and didn't return, with Liverpool taking full advantage in his absence. 8. Ross Barkley: 7.5
With time on the ball precious such was the speed of Liverpool's counter press, he was still able to make the most of it when possible, one wonderful pass over the top for Ogbene to latch on to. Even he got caught in possession on occasion after the break though, but despite the game being up, he kept pushing in the closing stages, taking the fight to the Reds. Won a number of fouls in dangerous positions, as he also had one attempt saved by Kelleher, sending another couple into the stands. Photo: Clive Brunskill
