Hatters rated v Accrington

Elliot Justham: 6.5 - Keeper made a crucial block from Anthony Barry’s low free kick with the scores at 1-0. Had that gone in, could have been game over for the visitors.

Scott Cuthbert: 6 - Defender was caught out of position for the opener with Stanley breaking from a Luton corner, but on the whole gave a solid debut, particularly aerially. Long throw led to Town’s late leveller too.

Scott Griffiths: 6.5 - Full back looks a lot more comfortable now he’s finally over his injury problems from last season. Defended well, while got forward to good effect too.

Steve McNulty: 6 - Captain organised well and limited Accrington to few chances of note until Hatters were chasing the game late on.

Luke Wilkinson: 6 - Centre half was selected alongside McNulty for the opening game and wasn’t troubled too much throughout against Accrington’s front-line.

Danny Green: 6.5 - Set-pieces were surprisingly disappointing on the afternoon, but did show some lovely touches and skill to fashion some crossing opportunities for Town’s strikers.

Jonathan Smith: 6 - Midfielder was well aware he had erred badly for the penalty with what he labelled a ‘sloppy’ challenge. Made up for it by turning Mackail-Smith’s attempt into the net though.

Nathan Doyle: 6 - A fairly quiet game for Doyle as he kept things ticking over in midfield without ever fully exerting the influence on show from last season.

Paddy McCourt: 6 - Always a threat when turning with the ball at his feet, but on this occasion, was too easily dispossessed by Stanley’s defenders. Once fully fit, should be a different proposition.

Craig Mackail-Smith: 6.5 - Striker showed glimpses of his obvious class as was always playing on the shoulder of the last defender. Fine volley led to Hatters’ leveller too.

Josh McQuoid: 5.5 - Striker showed some good link-up play with Mackail-Smith at times, but not a great deal of end product, although wasn’t helped by Town’s final ball often breaking down.

Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu (SUB): 6.5 - Really pleasing to see Pelly back and looking fully fit once more. Few barnstorming runs caused panic and displays like this will only help his match sharpness.

Paul Benson (SUB): 6.5 - Added some real class to the attack and showed signs already that his re-formed partnership with Mackail-Smith could bear fruit.

Jack Marriott (SUB): 6.5 - A real game-changer as only had 15 minutes, but was lively, always on the front foot and might have won it with a late chance.
