Hatters rated v Southend

Mark Tyler: 6 - Barely had a save to make all game, partially due to his resolute defence but also some wayward Southend finishing.

Michael Harriman: 7 - Impressive on debut. Slotted straight in at the back despite only being at the club for a few days. Solid all-round performance.

Steve McNulty: 8 - Remained calm and composed as Southend bombarded the Luton box in search of a goal but there was no way through.

Luke Wilkinson: 9 - An absolute colossus at the back and a dominant presence all game. Won every header, cut out several dangerous crosses and also posed a threat from attacking set-pieces.

Scott Griffiths: 7.5 - Set up the opening goal with a perfectly-weighted ball to put Lawless into space. Solid at the back too.

Nathan Doyle: 7 - Grew into the game and good in possession, although at times found himself too far up the pitch, leaving the defence exposed. Made one or two crucial interceptions in and around the box.

Jonathan Smith: 8.5 - A typical display from the midfielder. Never stopped running, made countless crunching tackles and used the ball well. Could have had two or three assists with better finishing from his team-mates.

Alex Lawless: 7.5 - Started well and scored a superb goal to give Luton the lead, cutting inside before curling into the top corner. Faded as the game progressed though.

Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu: 7 - Didn’t see much of the ball after starting on the right but enjoyed better fortunes when moved to the left. Wreaked havoc at times after the break, drawing numerous fouls and providing a good outlet as Luton looked to counter-attack.

Andy Drury: 7 - Forced the error that led to the second goal then kept his cool to play Cullen through.

Mark Cullen: 7.5 - Put himself about up front, stretched the Southend defence and was rewarded with a goal.

Alex Lacey (SUB): 6 - Came on for the last few minutes to help Town to see it out.
