The 21-year-old, who made 13 first appearances for the Hammers after coming through the ranks at Upton Park, was released by the Premier League side yesterday evening.

During his time with West Ham, Potts represented England at U18, U19 and U20 level, while also having loan spells with Colchester United and Portsmouth.

On his latest addition, following Jack Marriot and Scott Cuthbert into the club, Town boss John Still said: “He’s young man, a young player who’s reasonably experienced.

“He’s played in the Premier League, he’s played lower league – a left sided defender who can play left back and centre half – he’ll be a good addition to our squad.

“He’s always been a player that we were interested in if it became possible, and when you look at the other players we’ve taken from West Ham, and other local teams, it gives us a good opportunity to look and we’ve been looking at Dan for some time.

“He knows how to defend, he’s a good talker, a good organiser so although he’s only 21, he’s got experience.

“We felt we needed someone else at the back, and he plays centre half as well. So we’ve added some strength in depth.”

Hammers striker Elliot Lee, who was on loan with Luton last season, tweeted his delight at the move, writing: “All the best to one of my best mates @DanPotts03 signing for LutonTown! What a signing for the club, great player and great guy!”
