Town striker Danny Hylton is confident the Hatters have a squad in place to ensure they won’t be battling to avoid relegation on the final day next season.

After staying up last term, boss Nathan Jones has already added midfielder Jordan Clark from Accrington Stanley to his ranks, while ensuring Hylton, Kazenga LuaLua, Luke Berry, Elliot Lee and Glen Rea are all on board with new contracts.

Hylton believes the personnel at Kenilworth Road definitely have the potential to enjoy a more successful campaign this time around, as he said: “There’s going to be a few players joining us no doubt – that’s football.

“The manager’s going to be able to get the way he plays, and what he wants, across to the whole team.

“Some of the lads don’t know him as well as some of us, so it will be good for him to start fresh.

"We’ve got a few weeks of pre-season to get that across and nail everything down, and I’m sure for the first game of the season we’ll be ready to go.

“I thought the squad we had this season was too good to be doing that (fighting to stay up), but things happened and we were where we were, the table doesn’t lie.

“I’m positive that come this time next year, we won’t be talking about last day survival. I’m sure everyone will echo what I’m saying in that we believe we are better than that.

“If that was a season of being solid and staying in the league, then we’ll be looking to kick on now.”

After finishing the campaign with three wins from four and just one defeat in nine matches, then with the short turnaround until the new campaign starts, action kicking off on September 12, Hylton thinks Town can take the momentum gained into the new season.

He continued: “Definitely. We were talking about it the other day.

“Normally you’re off for six or seven weeks, and you get a long period of time off and you can lose it, but we are only getting two weeks off this time, so you are not going to be too far off where we were at the end of the season.

“They are going to want us to hit the ground running and I’m sure we are going to be looking to try to take that momentum into next season.”

A large number of the squad are players that, like Hylton, have come up from League Town with the Hatters.

Boss Nathan Jones had been in charge during that season, and half of the following one, often speaking about his additions being able to deliver Championship football.

The striker added: "He was right. We were in the Championship and we survived in the Championship.

“I’m not speaking out of turn, I believe everyone will echo what I’m saying, but I believe this squad is better than where we finished.

“I don’t believe that we were a squad, or a team, or a club that should have been fighting to stay up on the last day of the season.

“I don’t mean that disrespectfully to the league.

"I know it’s a fantastic league with fantastic teams, so we’ll be looking to kick on next season for sure and not fighting against relegation, so it was spot on I suppose what the gaffer said.”
