Town striker Danny Hylton is confident that the return of manager Nathan Jones will give Luton's players the boost they need to avoid relegation to League One this season.

The Hatters are back in action on June 20 at home to Preston North End as the 2019-20 season resumes after being postponed indefinitely since early March due to the coronavirus.

Luton go into the final nine games sitting second bottom in the Championship, six points adrift of safety, but with Jones back for a second spell in charge, after replacing Graeme Jones at the helm last month.

Hylton is confident his appointment will lead to improved displays on the pitch, as he said: “A new manager gives you a lift because, although you don’t on purpose lose games or anything, when you’re stuck in that rut it’s hard to get out of.

“But when you get a new manager in results pick up, performances pick up and we’re fortunate enough to know this manager.

“He’s a manager that we like, and players have got relationships off the pitch as well, so he’s a manager you want to do well for.

“He’s a manager that gives us everything, so everyone wants to give him 100 per cent back.

“Certainly, I’m one million per cent sure that it’s the best thing for Luton Town, getting Nathan back because he knows us, we know him and we want to do well for him.”

When asked whether Jones has given the squad a points target required to ensure the Hatters are playing Championship football again next season, Hylton added: "He’s touched on what he thinks we need and what we need to do, only briefly because we’ve not really been able to have too many meetings up until the last couple of days.

"He’s touched briefly on what he wants and how many points he wants.

"It sounds really cliche, but nine games, you take each one as it comes and that’s always been the way he works.

"I suppose it simplifies it and dumbs it down that the next game is Preston, this is what they’re good at, this is how we’re going to beat them, and he’s very good at doing that.

"So we’ll be fully prepared for Preston, we’ll know their strengths and we’ll respect them, but he’ll show us ways where we can beat them and where we can hurt them.”
