Luton forward Danny Hylton is desperate to get off the mark in the Championship next season.

The 31-year-old has scored goals in the Conference, League Two and League One, but is yet to find the net in the second tier.

He was restricted to 11 opportunities last term, as after spending the first half of the campaign nursing a knee injury, then wasn’t in previous boss Graeme Jones’ plans.

Once the Town board made a change at the top and Nathan Jones returned, Hylton was then back in the squad, featuring in all nine of the matches after lockdown as Town avoided relegation.

He came mightily close to getting the goal he craved too, dragging just wide against Hull City and then Blackburn Rovers on the final day.

Hylton, who has netted 58 times in 129 games for Hatters, bagged a hat-trick in the club’s 9-0 friendly win over Berkhamsted on Saturday.

However, his last competitive strike came against Doncaster Rovers on March 23, 2019, as he said: “Normally you play it down don’t you and say it’s not about me scoring, and it’s not, it’s about the team, but I can’t wait to score my first goal.

“It’s been a long time, it’s something that I think about a lot.

"I won’t put too much pressure on myself, but I hope that a ball just hits me somewhere and ends up going in the back of the net.

“I’ll take anything at the minute. Hopefully I’ll keep putting myself in the right positions when I play and hopefully I can score one before too long.”

Hylton is also hoping to have an injury-free season at Kenilworth Road this term, having spent far too much of the season just gone on the sidelines for his liking.

He continued: “Being out injured for ages, then coming back, going into lockdown for ages and then coming back and the season ending quickly, the last thing I want is another long break.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to training, touch wood – staying fit and being the fittest I’ve been for a long time, and getting back to playing my best football.”
