Ex-Luton striker Brian Stein saw his 31-year record as the last English player to score an overseas hat-trick in one of Europe’s major leagues broken by England starlet Jadon Sancho last night.

The 20-year-old former Manchester City youngster was on target three times in the second half for Borussia Dortmund as they thrashed Paderborn 6-1 in the Bundesliga, to become the first English player to bag a treble since Stein did for French side Caen against Cannes in Ligue 1 on May 31, 1989.

The prolific striker headed to Kenilworth Road in 1977 from Edgware Town as he was to prove one of the best pieces of business in the club's history, scoring over 150 goals in his first spell, including the winner as Town beat Arsenal 3-2 in the 1988 Littlewoods Cup final.

Stein then left Luton in the summer of 1988 and headed to France, where he signed for Caen.

It was in the final game of the 1988-89 season that he achieved his feat, during a match that he had initially started on the bench, coming on for Yvan Lebourgeois after 21 minutes.

He took just four minutes to find the net, before also scoring in the 85th and 90 minute to secure a 3-0 victory over a visiting side who introduced a certain Real Madrid manager and World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane midway through the second period.

Stein made 41 appearances over two seasons for Caen, scoring 11 goals, before heading to Annecy and then back to Luton in 1991 for a second spell, netting just three times as Town dropped out of the top flight.
