Town boss Nathan Jones admitted he had tried to sign Sheffield United defender Rhys Norrington-Davies on a permanent basis ahead of his season-long loan move to Kenilworth Road this afternoon.

The 21-year-old, who was with Rochdale last term, making 34 appearances and scoring one goal, agreed to spend the 2020-21 campaign at Kenilworth Road from the Premier League side.

The Luton chief had hoped the Wales U21 international's stint with Hatters would have been for years to come, but when that wasn't an option, agreed to take him for the entire term.

Jones said: "He's someone I watched for the year last year when he was on loan at Rochdale.

"He's a very attack minded, athletic full back, one we’re delighted to add because we tried to get him permanent but couldn’t.

"We got him on loan with a long term view in mind, and he's someone we're delighted to work with.”

With an injury to Dan Potts keeping him out for the first few matches of the campaign, and Brendan Galloway still some way short of being fully match-fit, then Jones knew he had to act ahead of the Carabao Cup clash with Norwich City this weekend.

On Potts' absence, he added: "He won't be a massively long time, but we were always going to sign a left back regardless anyway as we wanted competition in that area.

“We’re in the Championship now, we came up a year ago and we want to make sure that we are not in the same position as we were last year.

"So we've looked to strengthen in areas that needed strengthening and we think we've done that."
