Hatters boss Nathan Jones believes his side’s 1-1 draw against Birmingham City on Tuesday night further highlighted the character within the squad at Kenilworth Road.

Although Luton have started the season in impressive form, the midweek clash was the first time they had managed to pick up a result after conceding the first goal since the 3-2 victory over Blackburn Rovers on the final day of last term, suffering defeat on all four other occasions, without managing to score.

Falling behind to Lukas Jutkiewicz's now regular goal against the Hatters midway through the first half, Matty Pearson levelled on 37 minutes, neither side able to snatch a winner in what was a frantic second period.

It was another bonus that Jones took from a game he felt they should have come out on top of though, saying: "We showed great character, it’s out of nothing their goal, it was massively against the run of play.

"But we showed character, we came back, we went after them again and they’ll have know they've been in a game.

“They’ll know they've played against a side that's moved the ball very well, that's created enough to win a game, so if they didn't know, they know now

"We’ve got character, what we want to do is we want to establish ourselves as a good Championship side first and we are doing that.

“We've been better than Birmingham tonight, who are an established Championship side, who have increasingly big budget, who have a history of being a Premier League club, a Championship side.

"To be dominating games like that shows we've come a hell of a long way.

"We're showing facets of our game, scoring from set-plays, we're showing now that we can create more, we are dominating possession more, we're going up against sides now and being more expansive.

"Against Blackburn (at the weekend) even though we drew and we beat them last season, the performances were chalk and cheese, in terms of the level, in terms of where we were and that’s all we can do.

"If we keep evolving at this rate, we've got a good future.”

A set-piece was to lead to Pearson's first goal of the season, with four of Town's last six strikes now coming from deadball situations, although Jones wants to see some more hit the net from open play.

He added: "I don’t want to be just like that (set-piece goals), we’re creating enough, we got into great areas superbly well, moved the ball well, looked to our overloads, where could we hurt them and we did.

"I thought we were excellent, I really did, I was a really, really proud of that, it's just show that little bit more quality in the final third.

"We had enough opportunity to cross, to square, to pass, we got in so many times and it's just about getting that second goal as if we get the second goal then we probably go on and win it by more."
