Luton manager Nathan Jones will be keeping his fingers crossed that results go Town’s way ahead of their next game on Saturday.

This evening, third bottom Huddersfield, who are just two points above Luton, head to Birmingham City, kick-off at 6pm, while Sheffield Wednesday, not yet completely safe, and with the prospect of a possible points deduction from the FA on the horizon, host promotion-chasing West Bromwich Albion at 7.45pm.

That is followed by fourth bottom Hull City, also two points in front of the Hatters, entertaining sixth bottom Middlesbrough tomorrow night, with Friday pitting Charlton Athletic, in 18th, at home to Millwall.

After drawing 1-1 with leaders Leeds yesterday, a favourable set of results will see Luton with the chance to move out of the relegation zone when they host Reading on Saturday, as Jones said: "It’s not about positions now.

"We were six points adrift going into the opening game (against Preston), we cut that down to two at the minute with games to come up.

"Hull play and Huddersfield play, so the maximum it's going to be is five, so we've cut the gap.

"Hopefully it won't be, hopefully it will three or two, or whatever it is, but that's all we wanted to do is coming out of this run of games, which are the most difficult run of games I think any side has had, with the utmost respect to everyone in the league, but that's a tough, tough start, and we've been excellent.

"So hopefully either result will go for us tomorrow and we have cut back the gap going into the final segment of games.”

Attacker Harry Cornick will keep an eye on proceedings elsewhere, but knows it matters little if Luton don't care of their own business.

He added: “It’s a boost to get the points, it’s hard when you’re in this position as you’ve got to look at other teams.

"That’s probably the worst thing you can do, so you’ve just got to concentrate on yourself.

"We know what we've got to do to stay in this league and it’s not really how many points you’re going to need, as if you look at other teams you start thinking about them too much.

"We’ve just got to go into every game and try to win it as if we win our games, then I’m sure we’ll stay in the league."
