Luton manager Nathan Jones admitted he was surprised but 'happy selfishly' that top scorer James Collins had missed out on being selected for the Republic of Ireland squad.

The 29-year-old forward has managed four goals from his opening four games this season, including a hat-trick against Norwich, but wasn't included by new boss Stephen Kenny for the games against Slovakia, Wales and Finland.

The Irish chief has instead gone for Callum Robinson (West Bromwich Albion), Callum O’Dowda (Bristol City), James McClean (Stoke City), Aaron Connolly (Brighton & Hove Albion), David McGoldrick (Sheffield United), Adam Idah (Norwich City) and Shane Long (Southampton) as his striking options instead.

When asked about his omission, Jones said: "I'm very (surprised) but delighted.

"I’m really sad for James, it's Ireland’s choices, but it means that I get a player rested.

"I’m very surprised because I think he’s good enough to at least get in the squad but that is my opinion.

"Honestly I’m reasonably happy, a bit surprised but happy selfishly."

Collins currently has four caps to his name, with one goal, the last of his appearances coming against Switzerland in October 2019.
