Justham expected to start at Accrington

Hatters boss John Still has revealed that Elliot Justham is likely to start ahead of Mark Tyler in goal for Saturday’s League Two curtain-raiser at Accrington Stanley.

The young keeper played the final 15 games of last season with Tyler suffering a knee injury and although the veteran stopper declared himself fit to the News/Gazette this week, Still is wary of throwing him straight back in.

He said: “I don’t think Mark has had enough training or quite enough games of the level we’d like, I think he’s probably just a bit behind, so it’s not a difficult decision to make.

“Mark’s very experienced, he can play, there’s no doubt about that, but I think it would be very unfair on him to push him into a situation where he perhaps hasn’t done enough work.

“So in the next week or two, it will be something we’ll have to start thinking about for sure.

“It’s football. When your opportunity comes you have to take it or the door closes and someone else gets their chance. I think Elliot’s done very well, I’ve been very pleased with him to be honest.”

When asked if any other members of Town’s squad who might miss out, Still continued: “Possibly Mark O’Brien, he’s missed a few games so we might just give him a bit more time.

“Possibly Josh McQuoid too. We’ll probably involve him, but he just picked up a little knock. He could play, but we’ll probably be a bit cautious with that.

“Other than that, Paddy McCourt missed a little bit, but not a lot, so this afternoon we’ll all sit down here and throw it all around, but in my mind, I know where I am.”

Midfielder Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu is back fit once more, which was a huge boost for Still after he missed two thirds of last season.

The boss won’t be rushing him to get back to full speed though as he added: “I’m delighted, absolutely delighted he’s back, it’s like signing another player for what he gave last year.

“The last two weeks when he’s been fit, he falls into that category of a week or 10 days from being as fit as he could be as he hasn’t had a lot of football.

“We could use him, that’s what we’ll be talking about here, whether or not we want to chance anyone. I’m not sure we do, but I think by this time next week, it will be a different picture.”
