Keane: Winning is everything

TOWN may not be playing the sparkling champagne football that entertained fans earlier in the season, but the poor pitches are playing a big part, according to Keith Keane, writes Mark Wood

Talking after the 1-0 win at Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday night, he said: “A lot of people are saying we are not playing as well as we were earlier in the season, but I’m happy to take a 1-0 win and get promoted.

“The main reason we don’t like to come out and say that, is not to come out and use it as an excuse. Because it’s an easy excuse.”

The heavily-sanded beach-like pitch proved difficult to play on, and manager Richard Money is not expecting it to be any different at Kenilworth Road this weekend when Kidderminster Harriers visit.

He said: “It’s not much better than this I would suggest. I think we have played wonderful football this year and entertained people up and down the country.”

Even if Town are hindered by the pitch, Money is hoping the home crowd will get behind them, saying: “It will give us a good boost and hopefully the supporters will come and be with us and understand the pitch is not easy to play on.”

Luton won at the New Lawn thanks to a fortunate Lloyd Owusu strike, but Keane was just happy with the three points.

He said: “I think they probably had more possession but didn’t really do anything with it. It’s a good 1-0 away win.

“You can always put it down to the keeper should have done better, but we’ve taken our chance and that’s all that really matters.”

And he pledged the Hatters would be trying their hardest to chase down AFC Wimbledon and moneybags Crawley to win the league.

Keane added: “We’ve got to win the games (in hand) before we start saying we could be ahead of them.

“Crawley are on a good run, playing very well, and even when they are not they are winning.

“We are going to do everything we can because every one of us would much rather win the league.”
