The 20-year-old centre half put pen to paper on a new two-year contract recently and will be taking his first steps in the Football League next term.

Speaking exclusively to the News/Gazette, Lacey said: “I was very happy to sign for two years. I feel very at home here, it’s a club where I’ve come through the system, know the set-up, staff and directors.

“Hopefully by the time those two years are up we can get some more promotions and be in League One or
higher.”

The fact that Town are under the stewardship of boss John Still also played a huge part in making up Lacey’s mind to remain at a club where he made his debut as a 17-year-old in 2010.

Lacey had something of a bittersweet season as Town romped to the Skrill Premier title.

After being one of the standout performers in the opening stages, he then suffered a foot injury against Southport in November which kept him out for three months.

When fit again, he was unable to displace Fraser Franks as Steve McNulty’s partner in the centre of defence, but on reflection, was more than satisfied with his contributions.
