Hatters made it five games unbeaten with a 3-1 triumph at Southport on Saturday to finish the campaign in seventh place, as Lawless said: “We realised about five games ago that we couldn’t get into the play-offs and that was the aim, to get the club as high as we could.

“None of us wanted to, myself included, finish in a low position. We’re still lower, very low compared to what we wanted, so the aim was to get the wins and some performances. That will definitely be stuck in people’s minds for next season so hopefully we’ll start the way we finished.

“It’s always good to have in the back of yor mind, It doesn’t matter about the position you’re in or what you’re playing for, it’s a good habit to have.

“Away from home too, peple will remember this and use this for the future.”

On the game itself, Luton started slowly and were behind in the opening two minutes to Sean Clancy’s header before fighting back with Matt Robinson bagging his first Luton goal and then Andre Gray netting twice.

Lawless said: “We weren’t quite happy with the way we started. We came into this game wanting to win, so it was nice to come away with a win and change the game around, it was good to do that.

“I think you see the top teams and that’s what they’re able to do. That can’t happen very often because sometimes you can’t get back. But the lads got back and could have had a few more in the end, should have really, but we won.”

Robinson’s goal came after a delightful pass from Lawless, who laughed: “He still hasn’t thanked me for that!

“No, it’s good for the young lad and his confidence. I’m sure he’ll enjoy that and take that into next season which is great for him.

“He’s got a lot of heart and determination and if you want to learn, he can be a very, very good player. Hopefully he’ll kick on now from that, getting a goal, and go into next season.”

With Luton’s players enjoying a break for the next few weeks, Lawless will still keep himself ticking over during the close season as he added: “I think gone are the days when people don’t do anything, it’s not possible.

“You don’t see people like Ryan Giggs playing to their 40, there’s a reason behind stuff like that with the science there is, so I’ll come back raring to go.”
