Luton host Manchester United this weekend looking for a first league victory over the Red Devils at Kenilworth Road in over 35 years.
Back on March 14, 1987, the Hatters saw off Alex Ferguson’s side 2-1 in their Division One contest, striker Mick Harford putting the hosts 1-0 up and Brian Stein adding the second in front of 12,509 supporters. Bryan Robson pulled one back late on, but to see who lined up for Town that day, check out the gallery below.
5. DF: Mal Donaghy
Classy defender didn’t miss a game for the Hatters that season as he stepped up in the absence of Steve Foster to make sure Luton won their fifth successive Division One fixture at Kenilworth Road. Photo: Hatters Heritage
6. MF: Peter Nicholas
Welsh international swung over a deep cross that was misjudged by visiting keeper Gary Walsh allowing Mick Harford to pounce at the far post to open the scoring for Luton, while let fly with an effort of his own only to miss the target. One of Luton’s three ever-presents during the season, scoring once too, that coming in the 2-1 win over West Ham United. Photo: Hatters Heritage
7. MF: Ricky Hill
Midfielder saw this header tipped on to the bar by United keeper Gary Bailey, while he also had a go from 30 yards which was off target as well. Had another attempt from Rob Johnson's cross, but in the end had to settle for an assist, picking out Brian Stein to make it 2-0 to the Hatters. Having been out with injury during the campaign, he went on finish strongly, scoring against QPR to make it two goals from his 30 appearances. Photo: Hatters Heritage
8. MF: Ashley Grimes
Sent a free kick narrowly over the top as he couldn’t make it three goals in six matches having netted against both Newcastle United and West Ham United. Played in both the left back and left wing positions for Luton as they enjoyed a terrific season in the top flight. Photo: Hatters Heritage
