Hatters boss Nathan Jones has urged for a final decision to be made over the points deductions to be handed out in the Championship ahead of the final round matches this week.

Going into the final game of the season on Wednesday, the Hatters currently sit third bottom of the table, level on 48 points with fourth bottom Charlton, but behind the Addicks on goal difference.

However, they are in reality a place higher, due to Wigan Athletic being docked 12 points at the end of the campaign for entering administration recently, dropping them to 46 points and moving Town out of the drop zone, ensuring they would stay up with a win at home to Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night.

The Latics have appealed the decision though, with the case to be heard by an independent panel appointed by Sports Resolutions.

They are due to find out their fate some time before Monday, July 27, meaning that even if Luton did triumph in midweek and other results went against them, they would face a nervous wait to see if they are indeed safe.

Meanwhile, the FA are also still yet to act regarding Sheffield Wednesday, who sit in 16th position, just eight points above Luton after a 5-3 defeat to Fulham on Saturday.

The Owls could also face a points deduction of their own after being hit by an EFL misconduct charge back in November 2019, with the outcome of the case still unknown.

Jones believes the uncertainty should be removed ahead of the games, saying: “We don’t know about the deductions, who knows what’s going to happen with these financial fair play things and if someone’s in administration, or going to get it, then deduct them the points, do it.

“But if you take it into the last game and they’re hoping something happens, I don't know, so at the minute we know that we need something from the last game.

“It's a good feeling though, to get it where we are now shows this group have given everything.

"They have given me absolutely everything, now we have to try to finish the job.”

The fact that Luton know a win would see them remain in the Championship, as long as Wigan's appeal is rejected, considering they were on the verge of being cut adrift when the season restarted last month, is a massive boost for Jones.

Speaking after a massive 1-0 win at Hull City on Saturday, he added: “That’s a good feeling as when we came in, we had that six, effectively seven points behind to get it to where we are now.

“I thought we were outstanding. To come away with the importance of the game, it is trapdoor time, I just thought they were outstanding.

"They are amazing, they are immense, I love working with them and I am so proud of them."
