Luton boss Nathan Jones has confirmed he would love to sign Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Christian Walton again one day if possible.

The 25-year-old had a hugely successful loan spell at Kenilworth Road back in the 2016-17 campaign, making 33 appearances and keeping nine clean sheets.

He was then hastily recalled by the Seagulls just days before a home game with Cheltenham Town, which hindered Luton's promotion chances dramatically, as they ended up with Matt Macey and Stuart Moore between the posts, both making costly errors as Town missed out in the play-offs.

Since then Walton has gone to have further loan spells with Southend United, Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers, and was tipped to challenge Matty Ryan for the number one spot at the Amex this season until an injury in pre-season has seen Robert Sanchez move above him in the pecking order.

He is now fit once more though and was linked with a move to Luton on social medial although with Town having three keepers on their books, club record signing Simon Sluga, plus James Shea and Harry Isted, a move seemed unlikely.

However, when asked about the prospect of re-signing Walton again, Jones said: “We really like Christian, I know Christian really well obviously from my time at Brighton and from his time here.

“He’s a Brighton goalkeeper and he is someone that will always get linked with us because of the relationship we have with him.

“We care about him, we want him to do well but if ever I had the opportunity to re-sign Christian further down the line or whatever then I would take it.

“We’re very strong here in terms of that (goalkeepers) but he’s someone we care about, someone we really like, someone within the Luton family, his closeness with Glen Rea obviously but he’s at Brighton, a good club.

“We love Christian, we care about him and we only hope that good things happen, you never know, good things may happen to him here.

“We are always interested in good players, he’s someone we had here and did fantastically well for us, the loan was cut short which proved costly for us in terms of things.

“You never know, if we had a clean slate and I didn’t have any goalkeepers here for example then Christian would be very high on my list because one, his goalkeeping ability, his prowess and then also we have had him here.

“He will always get linked, we always want him to do well and if I had an unlimited budget and unlimited number then he would be one we’re interested in.

"There is no point commenting on that now because the scope is different.”
