Luton have been linked with a move for former Wigan Athletic utility player Kal Naismith on a free transfer by website Football Insider.

The 28-year-old is currently a free agent following his exit from the DW Stadium earlier this month.

Despite having five months left to run on his deal, Naismith requested to terminate his contract by mutual consent last week to allow him to pursue a new opportunity, which was reluctantly accepted by the Latics’ coaching staff.

Speaking to the Wigan official website, he said: "Now is the right time for me to leave; I have an exciting and fresh opportunity for me and my family and that’s something I have to prioritise for myself, my partner and my children."

Naismith, who can play in a number of roles including striker, winger, midfielder and as a left back, came through the ranks at Scottish Premier League side Rangers, having stints at Cowdenbeath and Partick Thistle, while also representing Scotland at U16 and U17 level.

He left Ibrox in 2013, moving to Accrington Stanley, while then heading to Portsmouth in May 2015 for an undisclosed fee.

After his exit from Fratton Park, Naismith signed a three year deal with Wigan in May 2018, playing 84 times and scoring seven goals, including making 14 appearances this season.

Luton boss Nathan Jones confirmed yesterday that he was looking to bolster his defensive options following full back Rhys Norrington-Davies' recall by Sheffield United and subsequent move to Stoke City.
