Luton snap up Spurs attacker who Wilshere expects will make a 'difference'

Donley arrives at Kenilworth Road

Luton Town have announced the season-long loan signing of Tottenham Hotspur’s attacking midfielder Jamie Donley, a player who manager Jack Wilshere believes can make a real ‘difference’ in the final third for his side.

The 21-year-old has been with the north London club since he was eight years old, progressing through the academy to earn international honours with England from U15 to U19 age groups, before electing to play for Northern Ireland at U21 and senior level, scoring twice in eight caps so far.

He had a spell on loan with Hatters number one Josh Keeley at Leyton Orient for the 2024-25 campaign, scoring eight goals and adding 11 assists in 52 outings for the O’s as they reached the League One play-off final, beaten by Charlton Athletic at Wembley, voted as the club’s Player of the Year and also named Young Player of the Season as well.

Laster term, he had stints in the Championship with both Stoke City and Oxford United, scoring once in 15 games for the U’s, creating one goal too, as Luton chief Wilshere expects him to be a huge threat for Town in the final third, telling the club’s official website: “Jamie's a quality player and someone who we have kept our eye on since January. He went to the Championship with Oxford, but we’ve maintained a relationship with him.

“One thing we've done really well in this window is that we’ve had targets we wanted to go after. We knew the positions we wanted to improve or add depth in, and Jamie’s definitely been top of that list for a long time, so to get it done feels like a really important signing. He’s a player that can make the difference in the final third, and he also gives us something different in the centre of midfield, being left-footed.

“I kept saying that we weren't done with our business, but we had to wait for the right opportunity. Players sometimes come up a little bit later in the window, especially those like Jamie, who was really close to the first team at Tottenham all pre-season, and then gets told late on that he can go out. It was always in the plans to strengthen in that area and we’re delighted to get this one over the line.”

Discussing his close friendship with Town stopper Keeley, who he came through the ranks with him at Spurs, Wilshere added: “You want players to know everything, have clarity on how we're going to play and enjoy the way we want them to play, but ultimately, it's about how you make the players feel. I was speaking to Jamie and trying to convince him.

"It’s one thing coming from a manager, but then to speak to a good friend, someone who he was with at Spurs and Leyton Orient, who he trusts and who obviously only said good things about the environment and how we work, I think it's credit to everyone at the club for creating that. It shows we’re moving in the right direction.”
