Mackail-Smith on the move to try and stay fully fit

Luton striker Craig Mackail-Smith has admitted he is looking to move closer to Luton after another spell on the sidelines recently.

The summer signing completed only his eighth 90 minutes of the season in the 2-0 FA Cup defeat at former club Peterborough United on Sunday, his first start for over a month due to a niggling hamstring injury.

When asked about the stopstart beginning to his Luton career, Mackail-Smith said: “It’s been a little bit difficult, I’ve been travelling a lot having to get in and I don’t think that’s helped with my body.

“I have felt in good shape the last few weeks and am hoping to get closer to Luton and not travel in as much to allow me to stay injury free and perform better.

“I want to play week in week out, I don’t want to have stop-start where I’m in for a few games and then I’m injured.

“So I’ve got to do what’s best for me to make sure I sustain a run in the team and sustain my fitness.

“I’m looking at all aspects of that and that’s one I’m looking to do as soon as possible.”

In Mackail-Smith’s place, the likes of Jack Marriott and Josh McQuoid have performed well, with Marriott scoring eight goals so far, and McQuoid hitting four in six recently.

The striker added: “The young lads have stepped up to the place, Jack’s been fantastic when he’s come in and played.

“Josh has started to hit a good bit of form, so we’re looking pretty good going forward.

“We just need to make that all round better now. I’m not saying the defence is not doing great but as a team I think we need to demand more from each other and hopefully that can push us on to the next step.”
