The 21-year-old is now up to six goals for the season after his brace against Hartlepool on Saturday, although he is yet to make a league start since joining from Ipswich in the summer.

Marriott, who has scored four times in his last three games after coming off the bench, said: “I’m not surprised, that’s something you get. You want to come off the bench and you want to make an impact.

“Supersub, it’s not the worst, I’ll take it and just hopefully get a few more starts, a few more goals and push on now.”

Every time Marriott’s scored this term, he’s turned it into a double as midfielder Olly Lee said: “Jack’s been chomping at the bit to get his opportunity and every time he comes on he seems to score a brace.

“It’s a nice little knack to have and we’re pleased that he can come on and do the job.”

Meanwhile, assistant boss Terry Harris believes Marriott is always a threat for League Two defenders, adding: “He’s very sharp, he must be a nightmare to play against because he’s always on the shoulder, always looking for balls in behind and he can finish as well.

“I’m absolutely delighted for him. He’s a young lad, John (Still) knew what he was getting when he signed him from Ipswich and hopefully he’ll go on to bigger and better things.

“The we play, with Craig Mackail-Smith and Jack Marriott, any balls over the top and we’re in.

“Whether they score or not is another matter, but I’m delighted for Jack as he’s come on and taken his chance.”
