Marriott hoping to lead the line during Gillingham return

The 21-year-old striker had a month’s loan at the Gills in January 2014, making one substitute appearance, but could get to lead the line with Craig Mackail-Smith not expected to feature at Priestfield.

Marriott said: “I was there for a month a couple of seasons ago. They’re a good club and they have been doing all right.

“I think they won their first five games, so have got a good squad down there, but hopefully we can go there and turn them over as I feel we’re capable of beating anyone.

“Hopefully (I can start). It depends on how Craig is, how he recovers. I’m still hoping for a start no matter what, but if not I’ll see what I can do from the bench.”

Meanwhile, full back Stephen O’Donnell, who has missed Luton’s last two games, has urged Luton to make progress in a competition they won back in 2009.

He added: “I think 40,000 went to Wembley last time, that’s incredible and something you don’t see very often in Scotland, even with teams who have a bigger fanbase.

“It’s great to give that to the fans and fans want trophies. We’d much rather give them the league, but if we manage to get a wee run in this and a wee trip to Wembley, that certainly wouldn’t be a bad experience.

“I would love to play there, although we know the most important thing is the league.”
