Luton’s match-winner Kazenga LuaLua carried manager Nathan Jones' instructions to a tee during his cameo at Hull City on Saturday.

With just 20 minutes remaining and the scores goalless, the 29-year-old was sent on along with Danny Hylton for James Collins and Harry Cornick, the pair joined by George Moncur shortly afterwards.

LuaLua was sent out with the mission to change the game, and he did just that, arrowing a low drive beyond Tigers goalkeeper Matt Ingram and into the net for a precious, precious winner.

On what Jones had told him, the former Brighton and Newcastle winger said: “He said to me just to go out and enjoy trying to change the game as that’s the best way to get three points, just try to make something different for the team which I like to think I did.

“He said the same thing to Danny as well, go on and try and make an impact as we’re desperate for three points.

"We came on and did well when we came on, George Moncur as well, he did well when he came on too.”

After a quiet first half, Luton completely dominated the second period, but it was starting to look like the victory they needed so desperately was going to elude them, as they missed a host of chances.

Glen Rea headed over, while Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu and Hylton were wide, before LuaLua did brilliantly to set up Moncur, who could only shoot tamely at Ingram.

In the end, LuaLua took matters into his own hands, as with five to go, he set off, and after getting past one challenge, let fly, to score his second goal of the season and easily one of most important strikes of Town's season, lifting them out of a revised bottom three, once Wigan Athletic have their points deduction confirmed.

A typical acrobatic celebration followed before he was engulfed by his team-mates and coaching staff from the bench, as the Congolese attacker continued: "In that time we were desperate to score, so there was only one thing in my mind when I had the ball.

"I thought to myself 'I’m just going go and try make something for the team, try and shoot.'

"You’re hoping for the best, try and score and I was happy the ball went to the back of the net, it was really nice.

“Sometimes you can rush it and the ball’s going to end up in the stands, it’s about connecting.

"When you feel you’ve got a good connection, the keeper can make a save but the striker can tap in.

"It’s about make sure you hit the target, that’s the important thing, target.

“It’s a team work, we’re all together, we’re fighting to the end, so it was nice to go and celebrate with the boys, because we’re all together."

Although LuaLua wasn't aware of any explicit orders given to his side at the start of the season period by the Town boss, he felt they were much improved after the interval, saying: "I don’t know as I was doing warm up with the boys, so I’d like to think the gaffer did say something to the boys as we started the second half well and got three points, it’s the most important thing we needed.

“It’s massive, we knew the game is going to be tough, because they’re playing to get the points like we are.

“You can say first half it was not good, but when the game’s 0-0 you always have a chance.

"So they had a chance just like us, second half it was better, but three points were the most important thing."

Despite Hull being in exactly the same position as Luton ahead of the game, the lack of intent from the hosts was startling throughout, as Grant McCann's side didn't once look like even attempting to find a winner after the break, almost settling for relegation.

LuaLua was surprised with their tactics as well, adding: “It’s easier for people to say things in the stands, it looks easier, but when you’re there it’s difficult, it really is difficult.

"But if I’m honest, I would probably expect more from them, especially playing at home as well.

"But we came here to do what we needed to do, we got the three points, on to Wednesday night (against Blackburn Rovers) now."
