McGeehan happy to renew old acquaintances

The 20-year-old enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Luton last season, scoring three times in 18 appearances, helping the club to the Conference title.

McGeehan, who joined up with the U’s earlier this month on a short term loan deal and netted three in three so far, said: “I’m really close with Luke Guttridge. I’ve seen him a couple of times since and he was a bit like a mentor, he helped me loads and I always speak to him, he was great with me.

“He’s seen some of my Norwich games and hopefully he’ll play as he’s been injured.

“Pelly Ruddock too, we’re similar ages and I still speak to Matt Robinson a fair bit. I keep in contact with the others on Twitter, not intense conversations, but I was very close with Gutts and Pelly, while I still speak to Andre (Gray) a lot.

“I was still speaking to John (Still) every week for a while through the summer when they were trying to get something sorted.

“I went to the Southend game too and went into the office afterwards to have a good chat with him and saw all the lads as well.”

McGeehan had hoped to be given a chance at Carrow Road under former boss Neil Adams, who had been his youth team manager when he skippered the Canaries to FA Youth Cup glory.

However that never materialised, and although Adams has since been replaced by former Hamilton chief Alex Neil, McGeehan felt it best to look elsewhere for regular football.

Although Luton were keen on a permanent deal, the two clubs couldn’t agree a valuation, so the youngster ended up at Cambridge.

McGeehan said: “With Neil Adams at Norwich, he was the U18s manager and everyone thought I’d get a chance with him but he didn’t really give anyone a chance at all, he stuck with lots of experienced players.

“When he lost his job, you’re thinking to yourself, if you’re not going to get a chance with him, you’re never going to get a chance.

“It’s about getting out on loan and trying to do well. You want to go and win stuff. When I was at Luton we won, and that’s the best feeling you can get with the group of players you’re with.

“You learn so much, so my aim is to win things and my experience at Luton has helped me with that.

“It was a bit of tough one as Luton and Cambridge are not a derby, but there is a rivalry. So it’s quite weird to think that was the club I was going to go.”

McGeehan is now playing under Richard Money at the Abbey Stadium and was full of praise for the ex-Town boss, along with the current Luton manager John Still too.

He added: “Cambridge have got a really good manager, he’s a different style to John Still but equally believes in me and that’s what you need as a young player.

“I really like Richard Money, he’s a great guy and to have had John Still and Richard Money as my first two first team managers has been great as you can learn loads off both in different ways.

“I’ve always respected the gaffer (Still) and how much he believed in me. He’s a great manager, a great leader and motivator in the changing room. Terry Harris as well, Hak (Hakan Hayrettin), all the staff there are amazing.”
