McGeehan praises Hatters’ goal threat

The midfielder reacted quickest to Paddy McCourt’s low shot that was only half stopped by Barry Roche, slamming home from close range for his fourth of the campaign.

Luke Wilkinson and Jonathan Smith were also on target as Luton, as the Hatters have now netted 11 on their travels, with nine different scorers in all copmetitions.

McGeehan said: “I’ve had a good run and I just want to keep it going, try to get to 15 this season, that’s my aim.

“Wilko and Jack (Marriott) and Smudger have been scoring some good goals, people might not expect Wilko and Smudge and myself to chip in with as many as we have, but that’s the team spirit that we have.

“Everyone’s chipping in, everyone’s doing their bit. I feel sorry for Macka (Craig Mackail-Smith) every time he doesn’t score as he works so hard, but I’m sure his goals will come with the runs he makes.”

Fellow midfielder Smith is now up to three for the campaign, already his best return in Town colours since signing back in November 2012.

McGeehan sees no reason why he can’t try and reach double figures too, continuing: “It epitomises what Smudger is all about, a tough midfielder, I wouldn’t want to play against him.

“He gets stuck in and has got a good goalscoring tally as well. Why not push on and get to 10 as well. It helps the team, takes the pressure off the strikers.

“Smudger makes some great runs as well, so why not push on.”

McGeehan himself was played a bit wider at times at the Globe Arena, although he did take up a more central role when interchanging with McCourt.

On his position, he said: “It’s quite a free role, I don’t mind being out wide but obviously I’m a centre midfielder, so that is where I prefer playing.

“If the gaffer is playing me there at the minute it’s fine and if I can chip in with some goals, that’s all that matters and the team keeps winning.”

The victory made it three wins in a row for Hatters and McGeehan, who has often talked up the club’s chances of winning the title, is happy performances are finally starting to back up those claims.

He said: “We started getting the wins that are the important thing. We’ve started slowly, that’s not to say we should have started slowly, there were games we should have easily seen out, but it was sloppy play really, nothing to do with starting slowly, so it’s not a great excuse for us.

“We’ve been a little bit edgy the last couple of games, it’s been tight, but we knew we needed to start getting the results as the performances have been there.

“We know it’s the results that are important. We’ve managed to do that the last last few games, so it’s great to come here which isn’t the easiest place to go and win.

“We created a load of chances, I don’t think they were in the game much to be honest, apart from in the second half when it was all long balls.

“The likes of Macca (Steve McNulty), Wilko, Scott Cuthbert and Scotty Griffiths were awesome at the back. They won everything and we never looked like conceding although you’re never sure with this Luton side at the minute.

“We’re expecting to win this league, we’ve got the players here to do that. You’ve seen first half that we will punish any team that comes up against us.”
