McGeehan urges Hatters to stick together

The Hatters, tipped by many as one of the serious favourites for promotion this term, have stuttered badly so far, with just one win from their opening seven league games.

However, with two home games coming, as Mansfield head to Kenilworth Road this weekend, before AFC Wimbledon visit the following Saturday, McGeehan knows now is the time to show their title credentials.

He said: “I’d say we’ve got to go and get two wins and build some form.

“There’s no reason why we can’t go and get three, four, five, six wins on the bounce, and then we’ll probably be up there at the top of the table.

“If we can do that, then the confidence will be there and it’s just about sticking together as a whole club.

“Because believe me, we are very strong for this league, the players we have, anyone of our starting eleven gets into any other team I think, that’s how strong we are.

“We’ve got the squad that can win the league and we still can. It’s not a Premier League where the title’s gone after three or four weeks, teams lose every week, everyone beats everyone,

“So there’s no ‘oh we’ve lost, we can’t go up now,’ it’s there for the taking.”

One aspect of Town’s early games that McGeehan is more than aware needs eradicating and swiftly, is their worrying habit of conceding goals in the last minute.

Notts County netted the fourth stoppage time strike against Luton already this term, as he added: “It has become a bit of a theme for us, one we need to change as soon as possible.

“It’s just individual sloppiness at the end of the game where you lose your concentration and then it’s on our minds.

“So we need to stay strong for the next five or so games, so it doesn’t happen and then it’s not at the forefront of your minds.

“In a way it’s good that it’s happening now and not happening when we’re top of the league at Christmas and we end up throwing away a position like we did last year.”
