McNulty: Blame defence for Town’s play-off failure

Luton drew another blank on the road at the weekend during their 1-0 defeat to Southend, the ninth time they have failed to score on their travels this term.

Hatters’ tally away from Kenilworth Road stands at just 17 goals, the joint third lowest in the division and they now need an unlikely eight-goal swing to leapfrog seventh-placed Plymouth Argyle.

When asked if a lack of firepower had been the reason behind Town’s predicament, McNulty said: “No, blame the back four. We conceded too many goals when we were in that bad run of games.

“If we were losing games, we should have been losing them 1-0, not conceding three or four goals.

“We are a team that doesn’t concede goals. We do back four work, back five work, three or four times a week and it just wasn’t good enough.”

The weekend’s defeat at Roots Hall saw Town make it just 10 points from a possible 45, with 11 defeats in their last 15 games.

McNulty admitted it would be hard to take that the play-offs were now out of reach and although he is expecting a reaction from the squad, he still believes it has been a positive season.
