McNulty excited to be linked with Johnson

Hatters captain Steve McNulty believes the speculation surrounding a potential deal with former England international Andrew Johnson shows just how far the club has come.

Town manager John Still has confirmed Luton are in talks with the 33-year-old who has played eight times for his country and been sold for fees totalling almost £20million during his career.

McNulty said: “There’s speculation, but the gaffer has come out and said they have had talks.

“It would be nice if we do get players like that in, as it just shows how far we’ve come as a club that we’ve got players like him that we maybe can bring in.

“It’s good for the players, the staff and the club as a whole. If it comes off then great, he’ll come into a good, honest bunch of lads and hopefully he’ll add something with his experience.

“Until he turns up at the training ground, we can’t be getting excited about it though. We don’t really chat about stuff like that, you hear all kinds of rumours flying about, but we’re just here to get on with our job.

“Whoever he (Still) brings in, he brings in to improve the group and give us something that we need.”

Meanwhile, recent loan signing Jayden Stockley felt the addition of Johnson would be a great learning curve for his own career too.

He said: “He’s a player I’ve watched growing up and it will be brilliant if he came to learn things from him.

“The experience he’s got is so valuable, so even every day in training, I’m sure he’s got some great advice.

“You don’t get to that stage in your career, playing for England, representing your country if you’re not a brilliant player, so I think everyone could learn a bit from him.”

On whether the two of them could form a partnership upfront for Town, Stockley added: “If it came off then I’d like to play with him, he’s got obvious abilities, but that’s up to the gaffer.”
