The 24-year-old is the subject of a possible bidding war this week, with Hull City preparing a third bid for his services and fellow Championship side Burnley now rumoured to be interested too.

With Brentford already rejecting a deal worth around £5.5m, any potential transfer would see Luton earn upwards of £1m due to their a sell-on clause believed to be 20 per cent for the forward they signed from Hinckley United, who netted 57 goals in 111 games during his time at Kenilworth Road.

McNulty said: “He’s gone there (Brentford) and done wonders, I think you speak to a few lads and they maybe thought that he could go there but might not have the success he’s had soon.

“He was always in working hard here and getting on with things, but speaking to people apparently he’s gone there and stayed behind working with the staff too.

“He’s done really well, gone there, scored the goals, so you take your hat off to him. I wish him every success in football and hope he does kick on and gets up to the Premier League.

“He deserves it, he works hard and hopefully Luton will get a windfall from his sell on and that can go back into our playing squad as well.”

Gray still keeps in touch with members of the squad at Kenilworth Road too as McNulty added: “He does, he was a young lad and there was a group of them that used to get about and do stuff.

“He still speaks to Pelly Ruddock and a few of the other younger lads here, so there’s always coming in telling how he’s getting on and what he’s doing.

“It’s good to see someone that’s worked so hard and that you’ve played with doing so well.”
