The 30-year-old was confirmed as Ronnie Henry’s successor by boss John Still in today’s press conference.

On the decision to appoint McNulty, who has become a firm crowd favourites in his time at Kenilworth Road, boss John Still said: “Steve McNulty will be captain. When I came, Ronnie was the captain, I didn’t see any reason to change that, Macca will be how he is whether he’s the captain or not, there was no need to do anything.

“But Ron’s obviously now gone, and I think he would be most people’s choice to captain the football team.

“If it wasn’t my choice, I’d pick someone else regardless of what the outsiders might think, but I think he’s the ideal candidate.”

Still also admitted that other candidates existed within the squad too, continuing: “Paul Connolly is a good talker, Gutts (Luke Guttridge) is a good talker, (Mark) Tyler’s good, Benno’s (Paul Benson) good, so we’ve got candidates there.

“Een Matt Robinson’s got a little bit of something about him, he’s only a young one, but I think Steve’s the right choice.”

It was a popular choice with long-serving midfielder Jake Howells too who added: “I think he’s the most likely for the captain role at the club now that Ronnie’s gone.

“I think he should step up in my opinon and deserves being the captain. Hopefully he can lead us to promotion again.”
