McNulty wary of Stanley threat on opening day

Last term, Luton trailed 2-0 after just 16 minutes, before fighting back to draw 2-2 thanks to goals from Luke Rooney and Jake Howells.

McNulty said: “We were really poor on the day last season I think it took Luke Rooney to come on and a bit of magic got us back in the game.

“In the end we were unlucky not to win it, but listen, in this division you can’t give teams a one or two goal head start. Hopefully we’ll be going there this season with a different mindset, different aims and it won’t happen.

“You’ve got to go there (Accrington) at some point, so why not go there first game of the season.

“We’d all like to be at home first game of the season, but we’re no. I know the manager (John Coleman), know the assistant and know a few of the lads there.

“People talk about budgets and stuff, they must have one of the lowest budgets in the league, but it doesn’t matter and believe me, it will be one of the toughest places you’re going to go and one of the toughest games that you’re going to get this season.

“The hard work is all done now, we couldn’t prepare anymore and I don’t think we could have done much more.”

Boss John Still echoed his captain’s thoughts about the first game of the campaign, as on the clash with Stanley, he said: “They’ve got a good manager, assistant manager, decent players, not a place you’d pick to go, but a proper football club with proper football people.

“If they do lack anything in quality, they won’t lack in commitment and desire in the first game of the season.

“This is going to be tough, tough, it really is. These first few games are always tough because everyone’s lively, everyone wants to get on with it.

“We know we’re going to face a difficult opponent, but throughout the season we’re going to face different sorts of challenges and we just have to be ready for those challenges.”
