The virtually full strength Red Dragons, who conquered Grimsby Town on penalties at Wembley last season, went out of the competition with barely a whimper.

Morrell said: “We’ve gone out of the FA Trophy, as holders with a whimper. We didn’t turn up today and it’s hugely disappointing. We were playing a good team, probably the toughest in the draw but I played a strong team because we needed to get back to winning ways.

“We weren’t at it from the start, it could have been three or four nil. We were lucky to go in one behind. We gave it a bit of go in the second-half and a bit more when we went down to 10 men but the second goal killed it.

“They had a lot of young players in their side but they came at us from the start. When you play like we did we get beaten by anybody, I don’t care who you play. We got battered; in the first-half they were far too good for us, we didn’t turn up, which is hugely disappointing.

“I don’t know if some of them thought they were too big for the second round of the Trophy, but we weren’t at it right from the start.”
