Morrell: Trophy takes on more significance after FA Cup exit

Wrexham boss Andy Morrell has placed more importance on the FA Trophy after his side were knocked out of the FA Cup against Oxford United on Monday.

The Red Dragons won the competition last year, beating Grimsby on penalties in the final and Morrell told the Evening Leader: “I may try something a bit different, I don’t know. Obviously we are not in the FA Cup now so the Trophy takes a bit more significance I suppose.

“We have had a bit of a rest before so we need to make sure that we keep the lads fully fit. We will take a team that will try and beat Luton.

“We will look at it this week, check on injuries and how people are, and take it from there but we have got a busy period coming up so it is a balancing act to get all the lads fully right to play.

“Some of our lads do need the rest to get over niggles and knocks so it is just getting that balancing act with all of them to make sure they are still at it but have got the good rest and are fully fit to go.”

Hatters boss John Still has already confirmed he will go with a similar squad to the one which eventually saw off Staines Town after a replay as Morrell continued: “Luton might see it differently as well next game, we will just have to pick a team and look after ourselves.

“You wouldn’t (want to get knocked out of two cup competitions in less than a week) but two tough draws. We will go to Luton and try to win that.”

“The league is the priority but we try and go as far as we can in every competition.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Dean Keates added: ““We have got a game this weekend, it is in the FA Trophy, we are the champions and obviously we want to defend it so we will go down to Luton and hopefully get back to winning ways to start the run off again.”
