Luton Town are expected to finish the Championship season in front of empty stadiums after Prime Minster Boris Johnson announced his road map for easing coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Supporters have been prevented from attending sporting venues across England since the tier system was ended in December, once the Hatters had welcomed 2,000 fans back for the 3-0 win over Preston North End.

Revealing his plans to the House of Commons this afternoon, Johnson confirmed that from Monday, May 17, indoor events could be capped at 50 per cent capacity or 1,000, whichever is lower, and for outdoor events, it would be 50 per cent capacity or 4,000, whichever is lower.

Larger outdoor seated venues such as football stadiums will be allowed up to 10,000 people or be a quarter full, whichever is lower.

The proposals rule out the possibility of fans attending any further regular-season matches in the EFL, with Town's final home game taking place on May 1 against Middlesbrough, with their season ending a week later at QPR.

There was hope for next season though, with all restrictions aiming to be lifted by June 21 which appears to place no limits on stadium capacities as long as the Covid-19 virus is still in retreat.
