O’Brien confident Hatters are in it for the long haul

Defeat by leaders Plymouth Argyle at Kenilworth Road on Saturday saw Luton trail their opponents by a hefty 13 points.

However, O’Brien, who was one of 12 new players signed by boss John Still in the summer, is remaining confident they can overhaul that deficit.

He said: “No-one likes to lose, but we’re going to go out every Saturday and try to win games.

“I feel as though we’ve got the squad for the long run to get stronger and stronger.

“We’re going to end up clicking and everything’s just going to go win after win.

“The lads’ spirits in training have been brilliant too, so I don’t think it’s knocked our confidence too much.”

O’Brien was aware though that if Luton are to push for automatic promotion, they need to reverse a worrying run of form that has seen them fail to win in their last four games, starting at Dagenham & Redbridge on Sunday.

He continued: “If you look at the Championship, League One and League Two, you put a string of games together and before you know it, you’re climbing straight up the table.

“These leagues are so unpredictable, five, six wins in a row and all of sudden you’re straight back up there as everyone’s beating everyone.

“So I feel if we do end up sooner rather than later putting a run together we’re going to just climb the table and get stronger and stronger as the season goes on.”

The former Derby County player has been waiting patiently for his chance this season, restricted to just one league start so far and six appearances in total.

He said: “As a footballer you’re always going to be frustrated if you’re not playing, but I think the times I wasn’t playing the team was going on a great run.

“Within seven games, they’d won five, drawn two and you can’t really start knocking on the door and hoping to get in.

“But I feel as though when the cup games have come around and I’ve got my chance to play, I’ve played to what I can do, in centre mid where I don’t really play and then centre half against Gillingham.

“So I’m keeping myself ticking over so that I’m ready whenever the chance comes on.”
