Club captain Steve McNulty and Luke Wilkinson were the first choice pairing last term, with back-up choices Fraser Franks now at Stevenage and Alex Lacey currently on the transfer list.

Still has moved to strengthen his defensive options considerably with the additions of Scott Cuthbert and Magnus Okuonghae, before also bringing in O’Brien too.

The Irishman said: “I think that’s a predicament you’d rather yourself be in than having a lack of people in those positions.

“For the manager having all those other names as choices to choose to play on a Saturday, every other manager would love to be in a predicament like that.

“It just shows the strength in depth that he’s bringing in just in case anything that might happen throughout the the season because it’s a long season.”

Although O’Brien can potentially help out in midfield if need be it’s at the back where he feels most comfortable.

He added: “I’ve played my career at centre back and I think that’s where I’m best.

“I do feel like an old school centre half as my main attributes are, to win my tackles, win my headers and try and put defending first, more than anything else.”
