Striker of some repute in his playing days, he went to Bury as caretaker manager in 2017, soon getting the job permanently. Reached the semi-final of the EFL Trophy and won three manager of the month awards on his way to leading the Shakers to promotion from League Two. Went to Plymouth Argyle in June 2019 as he secured an immediate return to League One for the Pilgrims, resigning in December 2021 to move to Preston North End.
