The full back, who penned a two year deal on his arrival from Partick Thistle, had seen Luton making an inauspicious start, failing to win any of their opening five league games.

However, they finally broke their duck against Cambridge United at the weekend and O’Donnell nows hopes they can motor up the table to reach their goal of promotion.

He said: “I don’t want to be playing in League Two next season and I think I can speak for the whole of the dressing room when I say that, but we need to do our talking on the pitch.

“The manager brought in 11/12 new players and it’s getting to know everyone, getting to know the strengths and weaknesses.

“Something you try and gel during pre-season,but having five weeks to get know 11 new faces and everyone else is tough.”

O’Donnell is playing in England for the first time in his career, having spent four years north of the border, two of them in the Scottish Premier League.

On the differences he’s encountered so far, the defender added: “It’s certainly as competitive as the SPL, but at the moment its much of a muchness.

“We’ve not hit top gear yet and as soon we do I’m expecting us a team to steamroller teams.

“When that happens I’ll be able to say it’s a lot easier than the SPL but as we’ve not started well, every game is tough and a battle, similar to the SPL.

“Personally, I’ve settled in well off the pitch, but on the pitch I need to do a bit more.

“I’m getting a bit better and a bit more confident, but again it’s trying to get to know players.

“I spent the last four years playing with the same guy in front of me and I knew everything he did, knew everything he was good at, knew his wife, everything.

“So it’s just bedding in. It’s going to be tough and at times maybe the quality won’t always be there, but I will always give 100 per cent, keep trying week in week out and do my best for the club.”
