The Hatters, who had won two out of their previous three matches to give themselves a chance, had to beat Norwich City to stay up. Midfielder Danny Wilson missed a penalty in the first half, before stepping up once more from the spot in the second to net the winner as Ray Harford's side remained in the top flight. Below, the Luton News takes a special look at just who took to the field for Town that day.
1. Alec Chamberlain
Only came into the side for the final six games of the campaign, keeping three clean sheets in the process, including against Norwich, after Les Sealey had played in all the previous matches.
2. Tim Breacker
After a stopstart beginning to the season, only playing four times before the turn of the year, he returned to the team in January for the win over Everton, staying in the side for the remainder of the campaign.
3. John Dreyer
Another who missed large chunks of the campaign, returning to score in the 2-2 draw with Coventry on April 15 and staying in for the run-in as Town kept their Division One status.
4. David Preece
Injury kept him out until November, but he was back to play a full part from then on for the Hatters, although couldnt find the net from his 26 appearances that season.
